What drives the price
Bonded or friable
Bonded asbestos is locked into cement, as in most fibro sheeting, and is fairly stable while it is intact. Friable asbestos crumbles easily and releases fibres far more readily. Friable removal needs a higher class of licence, tighter containment and air monitoring, so it costs considerably more.
How much there is
Quotes are often worked out by area for sheeting. A larger job usually costs less per square metre, because set-up, travel and paperwork are spread across more material.
Where it is and how you get to it
Flat garage walls are quick. Eaves, roof sheeting, ceiling linings and tight spaces under a house take longer, need more protection and may need scaffolding or roof safety gear.
Condition
Sheeting that comes off whole is the cheapest to remove. Material that is broken, weathered or storm damaged takes longer and needs more care to keep fibres down.
Disposal
Asbestos waste has to be wrapped, labelled and taken to a facility licensed to accept it, which charges its own fees.
Testing and clearance
A sample may be needed to confirm what the material is, and some jobs need a clearance inspection by an independent assessor afterwards. Ask whether either is included.
Asbestos testing cost
Testing is usually a small cost next to removal, and it can save money: if a sample comes back negative, there is nothing to remove. Our asbestos testing uses NATA-accredited laboratory partners.
Comparing quotes
A low quote is not a bargain if it skips the steps that keep fibres out of your home. Check that each quote says:
- what material is being removed, and roughly how much
- how the area will be sealed and kept wet
- whether waste disposal is included
- whether testing, air monitoring or a clearance inspection is included
- who will do the work
Getting a quote
Our asbestos removal is done by in-house qualified technicians, not subcontractors. We carry $20 million in public and products liability cover and are CM3 certified for contractor safety and compliance.
Asbestos cost questions
Why do asbestos removal quotes vary so much?
They often cover different things. One may include testing, disposal and a clearance inspection while another leaves them out.
Is friable asbestos more expensive to remove?
Yes. It needs a higher class of licence, tighter containment and air monitoring.
Does testing add much to the cost?
Usually not, compared with removal. A negative result can also mean there is nothing to remove at all.
